If You Can’t Be Kind Be Quiet: How to Make Online Spaces and Photo Sessions Kinder

I recently joined a Facebook group for a new hobby. It was just for fun and something I found quite mindful. I posted a short hello and a quick video. I wasn’t asking for help, just saying hi.

Some people were lovely. Warm, welcoming, and kind. But others responded with judgement. Unsolicited advice. Condescending comments. “You should be doing this.” “Clearly, you haven’t thought about that.”

It knocked me.

And I’m someone who is confident. I’ve been running a business for years. I’m used to putting myself out there.

But it made me stop and think. What if I wasn’t so sure of myself? What if I were new, hopeful, and looking to connect only to be met with criticism? That could easily be enough to make someone give up.

Kindness Isn’t a Nice to Have It Is Essential

That’s why I’m slowly stepping away from online spaces that don’t feel safe or kind. Life’s too short for negativity.

It also reminded me why I put so much care into how I work. I’m a commercial photographer who understands that putting yourself in front of a camera can feel awkward. Vulnerable even.
