Why I Invested in New Brand Photos Again (and Why It’s About More Than Headshots)

The practical and strategic power of an evolving image library

By Siân Faire

Brand photography often gets reduced to “time for a new headshot”.

But the longer I do this work, the more I see that the most powerful brand images aren’t about looking polished; they’re about showing who you are, how you work, and what your business really feels like.

This is why I loved working again with Siân Faire, an Online Business Manager who helps service-based business owners create calmer, more sustainable ways of working.

Siân and I had already done branding shoots together last year, but this time the focus was different.
It wasn’t about replacing images; it was about evolving them.

In the piece below, Siân shares why she chose to invest in new brand photography again, what had shifted in her business and lifestyle, and why continually building a library of authentic images matters far more than a single shoot ever could.

If you’ve ever felt like your visuals don’t quite match your words, this one’s for you.

This year, I chose to invest in another brand photo shoot.

That might sound surprising, especially as I’d already had branding shoots in January and August last year. But this decision wasn’t about “needing new photos” in the traditional sense.

It was about alignment.

My brand hasn’t stood still, and neither has my business

Over the last year, my business has evolved in subtle but important ways.

What I do hasn’t dramatically changed. But how I work, how I live, and how I want my business to feel has.

My brand is about calm, clarity, space, and a gentler way of working. About designing a business that supports real life, rather than competing with it. And I realised that while my words were doing a good job of communicating that…
my visuals weren’t quite keeping up.

They were good photos.
But they didn’t fully show the life and work I talk about every day.

Moving away from stock images (and why that mattered)

Like many business owners, I’d relied on stock images to fill the gaps.

They’re convenient.
They look polished.
And they’re everywhere.

But over time, I noticed a disconnect.

The stock images didn’t reflect my reality.
They didn’t show how I actually work.
And they certainly didn’t help me stand out.

When everyone is using similar imagery, it becomes harder for your brand to feel distinctive, recognisable, or memorable.

I wanted images that were unmistakably mine.

Showing how I really live and work

This shoot wasn’t about perfect poses or a single “hero headshot”.

It was about capturing:

  • How and where I work
  • The environments that inspire me
  • The slower, more spacious rhythm I intentionally design into my days
  • The balance between business and life that my work supports

These images now give people a visual shortcut into my world.

They help potential clients feel what it might be like to work with me, before they’ve read a single word.

Why an evolving image library matters more than you think

One of the biggest mindset shifts for me was realising that brand photography isn’t a one-off task to tick off a list.

It’s an ongoing asset.

Regularly adding to your image library means:

  • Your website and content stay fresh and current
  • Your visuals evolve alongside your brand
  • You’re not repeatedly recycling the same few images everywhere

There’s also a very practical benefit:
original images support visibility.

Search engines and AI tools increasingly favour unique, authentic content. Using your own imagery, rather than widely used stock photos, can support SEO, image search visibility, and how your brand is recognised online.

It’s not just about aesthetics.
It’s about being seen.

More than headshots, it’s brand storytelling

Of course, headshots matter. People want to see who they’re working with.

But brand photography can do so much more.

It can:

  • Tell the story behind your business
  • Reflect your values and lifestyle
  • Support consistency across your website, social media, and marketing
  • Grow with you as your business evolves

This shoot gave me images I can use across my website, LinkedIn, blogs, newsletters, and beyond – without feeling like I’m forcing my brand into visuals that don’t quite fit.

A conscious investment, not an indulgence

For me, this wasn’t about vanity or “treating myself”.

It was about integrity.

If I talk about intention, alignment, and creating a business that supports real life, then my visuals need to reflect that too.

This shoot helped me bring my brand back into visual alignment with who I am now, not who I was six or twelve months ago.

And that, to me, makes it one of the most valuable investments I’ve made this year.

This shoot was a brilliant reminder that brand photography isn’t a “one and done” exercise.

Your business grows.
Your energy shifts.
Your work evolves.

And your visuals deserve to evolve with you.

Working with Siân again allowed us to capture not just what she does, but how she lives and works now; creating images she can use across her website, content, and platforms without relying on stock imagery that never quite fits.

If this article has made you rethink your own brand images, ask yourself:

Do my visuals still reflect who I am, or who I used to be?

And if you’re curious about Siân’s work and the calm, thoughtful way she supports her clients, you can find her at sianfaire.co.uk or connect with her here on LinkedIn.

More than headshots.
More than pretty pictures.
This is brand photography as storytelling.
