As 2024 draws to a close, I am reflecting on the December Nature Challenge Culmination and the year of walks and nature moments it represents. This project began as a simple way to explore the world around me during dog walks using my Google Pixel phone to capture what caught my eye. It has been a peaceful and grounding experience just me my dogs and the quiet beauty of nature close to home.
December brought a change. The busy festive season left less time for my usual strolls. The woods seemed quieter too. After months of watching the seasons shift December’s landscape felt still mostly browns and greys. Yet when you look closely nature still offers surprises.
Heavy rain had soaked the ground earlier in the month followed by strong winds that toppled several trees in the local park. Seeing these old trees fallen was a powerful reminder of nature’s strength and fragility.
After the storms I searched for colour in the muted landscape. I found a hazel tree holding onto its last green leaves and small catkins hinting at spring. Ivy showed bright green leaves and silvery beard lichens added texture to the scene. The cherry laurel’s dark glossy leaves held tiny buds a quiet promise of growth. A delicate spider’s web covered in dew sparkled like tiny jewels on a park gate.
One curious find was what I believe to be an oak apple gall. I am still learning about it and would welcome insights from anyone who knows more.
This year long challenge taught me to slow down and really see. Even in winter’s stillness there is life colour and change if you pay attention. I am grateful for this journey and look forward to more walks and discoveries ahead.
